Lancome Perfume Launch
Yesterday, I had the good fortune to attend the launch of Lancome's newest fragrance, called Magnifique. All I'm going to say at this point is that it really is Magnifique and really adds something to Lancome's collection of fragrances. Love it, and I'll tell you more about it when it comes out in September.
Also, the face for it is Anne Hathaway and she looks amazing! It's easy to see why Lancome picked her to be the spokesperson because when you smell the fragrance and see the ad campaign, you just think Devil Wears Prada, which is pretty damn awesome.

I am a Mille Femmes
A little while ago, I was contacted by the lovely people at Lancome telling me that I was chosen to be one of Mille Femmes. What is that, you ask?
Well, it's an artistic project where a photographer named Pierre Maravale takes portraits of 1000 women, in this case all of whom were chosen for their artistic contributions to the community! I was one of them, and now my picture is one of 1000 that hangs in BCE place, downtown Toronto. If you're in the area, go and check it out!
Last week I attended the launch party for the exhibition, which is officially part of Luminato. I munched on appetizers and had a look at my picture and those of many of my friends. When I left, I got a lovely Lancome goody bag, and since I like to pay it forward, a couple of those products are going into the giveaway bag. What will you get? A full-sized Lancome eyeshadow and a Juicy Tube. Really, it doesn't get much better than that.
If you haven't entered the ongoing giveaway yet, enter here!

Lancome Skincare for Men
A few months ago, Lancome launched their new skincare products for Men. I walked by the displays several times and I was drawn to the packaging which is sleek glass jars and bottles that give the rest of the Lancome skincare a run for its money.
I then asked a few of my male friends to try out the products and tell me what they thought. The one thing that men are known for is their practicality and in this regard none of the reviews lacked. All my friends said that the Lancome skincare was fine, but it was much more than they were willing to pay for shaving foam, moisturizer, and eye cream. On the other hand, the one friend that tried the eye cream would probably buy it rather than using his wife's.
The best review came from a friend who wrote this of the Renergy 3D cream:
"I really enjoyed using this product because of it's scent that just exudes luxury. I would definitely continue using the product if I could afford the $125 price tag, but for now, it is for those over the age of 40+ as recommended on the box. Although it has an anti-wrinkle, lifting component and is targeted towards the older demographic, I nevertheless enjoyed the firming and cooling feel it gave after a shower and shave. The amazing scent made me love the product, as did the sleek and classy design of the bottle. Applying it to my skin and seeing the shimmer it gave to my face look as if I had just been to an expensive spa. This is definitely a recommended product for those who can afford it. For me and the rest of us non-celebrities, it's back to using Nivea Visage and Ponds, which do the same basic functions at a tenth the cost."
And there you have it. Like all Lancome products, this one is clearly luxurious, but it's probably one that men are going to receive as a gift rather than buying it for themselves.
Update: The cream costs $75, my apologies for the mistake in pricing. Is it something men will buy now? I think if they believe it works, yes.

Lancome Thakoon Lipstick - Now Available!
Lancome's Pout-a-Porter lipsticks are always widely anticipated by fashion and beauty lovers alike. For both it's a chance to hold something from Fashion Week in your own hands. The Behnaz Red and the Proenza Pink might not have been for everyone, but here's a shade that's a little more universal: Thakoon's Pixel Pink.
Influenced by a pixelated floral print, the lipstick is a shiny sheer raspberry and is perfect for a natural minimalist look. Starting today, you can get the lipstick on Lancome-USA.com and beginning March 1st it will be available at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and Lancome's standalone boutiques in the U.S. If you can get your hands on it early, expect to pay $25... after that, the sky's the limit when it comes to snaring one of these lipsticks.

L.U.C.I. from Lancome
Of late, Lancome colour collections are ones to look forward to because they always include a couple of collectible pieces. The L.U.C.I. collection is no exception and it's star product is a shell that holds two beautiful eyeshadows - one that provides a pop of colour and the other that gives a more subtle effect. The collection is designed by Gucci Westman-Neville and she can do no wrong. The shadow compact and its mates are inspired by seashells - hence they fit into your hand compactly and light up your skin with shimmer and pearl.

The advertising campaign shows an ethereal futuristic look but when you use the products, that doesn't have to be what you end up with. If you ask me, the collection gives you something perfect for the Spring season - a way to wear not too much makeup, but to accent your look with as much colour as you want.
Like the Mystery Game collection last fall, the eyeshadow compacts have a certain strong weight to them. They are substantial and though meant to be used, are ideal collector's items. The beautiful mirror inside with a pearl attached gives this collection substance and style.

I love the white shades in the shadow compact. Yes, you can use them as highlighters, but wearing them alone on the lid of the eye instantly wakes up your look yet adds colour to it.
Besides the eyeshadow, there's also a shimmery highlighting powder called Photonic. It is sheer and completely wearable every day. Do click on the above pictures to see all these lovely images in their full glory. All the parts of this collection truly are a magical.

Lancome Cream Blush
How do I keep running into cream blushes wherever I go? Lancome now has their own version and if you've avoided cream blushes before, then this is definitely for you. It's soft and highly pigmented, and stays on your cheeks for a long time. I found that when I used this, I didn't even need to apply powder afterwards which is perfect because it looks so natural. I have to say that there are some great colours offered in the line - more than the traditional pinks - which means that there are good shades for highlighting and good shades for really defining your features.
The full range of colours is available at department store counters.

Lancome Platineum Eyes and Lips
I'd never before considered using a cream on my lips to moisturize them, but when Lancome came out with the Platineum Eyes and Lips Hydroxy(A) - Calcium Reinforcing Eye and Lip Contour Cream, I decided to trust the experts.
This cream is unlike most eye creams that I've tried before because it is not at all greasy! It absorbs quickly and is perfect for use during the day. Even makeup goes on smoothly on top of this, and you can be sure that your skin is going to be moisturized and not at all oily. Best of all, even around the lip area, there's no yucky taste which means that you actually feel like putting it on.
You must try it for yourself. Available at Lancome.com or Lancome.ca.

Well thousands of women will do almost anything to get their hands on Gucci Westman's limited edition lip colours even if they're not fans of the designers that she designs for. Here's an article on how she does it from wwd.com. Enjoy. Oh, and I have to admit that I want the colour that will be released in February. Badly.

Daria Creates a Colour Collection for Lancome to Raise Money for Charity
Most cosmetics companies employ supermodels to advertise their products — few, if any, actually allow those models to create them. That's a trend Lancôme is bucking with a new color cosmetics collection created by Daria Werbowy, one of the faces of the powerhouse brand.
Werbowy has created a three-stockkeeping-unit, limited edition collection that will be sold to benefit Centro Espacial Vik Muniz. The center, based in Rio de Janeiro, provides arts programs, education and training for young people from that city in an effort to keep kids off the streets and keep them away from gangs and drugs.
"This collection is a true expression of modern femininity, and it was really Daria's passion that inspired the project," said Odile Roujol, global president of Lancôme. "She truly believes in this cause and in fact, Daria shared her desire to help children the very first time we met her."
Werbowy's collection, which consists of a $42 eye shadow quad, a $24 lip gloss and a $26 lipstick, will begin to roll out in April 2008 globally and is a Sephora exclusive, except in countries where the beauty giant is absent. For instance, in Germany it will be exclusive to Douglas, while in the U.K. it will be exclusive to Selfridges.
"We are extremely pleased to be the exclusive retailer of the Daria Werbowy Collection for Lancôme — our first exclusive collection [with the brand]," said Betsy Olum, senior vice president of marketing for Sephora. "Daria has a wonderful creative flair and awareness of social responsibility — both of which are evident in this collection. We are confident our clients will be as excited about this collection as we are."
"Daria has a true passion for the charity, which we were very impressed by," said Eric Lauzat, president of Lancôme in the U.S., who added that Werbowy had long been eager for a project she could call her own. "Also, at Lancôme, our spokespeople don't just appear in ads. They are also brand ambassadors." For instance, Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann was the inspiration behind Lancôme's eco-chic initiative with Carbonfund.org earlier this year, Lauzat noted. "[Our spokespeople] are a new generation — they are very invested in philanthropic ventures, and it's important to us to be corporately involved in philanthropy, also."
Werbowy learned of the center, named for the Brazilian artist who also has a studio in Brooklyn, through the Lancôme team on a brand-related trip to Brazil. "We arrived and the next thing I knew I was in a huge airplane hangar watching a samba music and dance performance put on by the center's students," she recalled. "The kids did everything — the choreography, costumes, dancing and music. It was incredible to see something that they put together and were so passionate about."
With the help of a translator, Werbowy heard about the kids' paintings and sculptures, learned some samba dance moves and did some portrait drawings. The experience, she said, affirmed for her how universal the art process can be. "You don't need a shared language to express an idea or an emotion," she said.
Inspired by the kids and the colors she saw in Brazil, Werbowy headed into the Lancôme labs near Paris, armed with a scrapbook packed with colors and fabrics she liked, and spent a day learning about the makeup creation process. Next, Lancôme let her loose in the labs, although the process wasn't quite what Werbowy was expecting. She said she expected a chaotic science lab straight out of Hollywood, but found a quiet, organized space —which, she said with a laugh, she managed to mess up, tout de suite.
Werbowy began by mixing pigments, then graduated to adding pearl to eye shadows and learning techniques to make lipsticks more opaque or translucent — something that the former art student had a blast with. "I started to appreciate red lipstick and other makeup colors I generally don't wear," she said. "You can spend days creating one shade — I didn't really realize the extent of color creation before. But I loved the immediacy of being able to mix and then try things right away, and I got to keep mixing and changing them until they were perfect."
So, are there other beauty creation products in Werbowy's future? Don't rule it out. While Lauzat said no firm decisions have been made, the possibility exists that the collection could be a perennial fund-raiser for the center, and that additional sku's could be added in the future. Werbowy is firmly behind that idea, saying that she doesn't want her creation to be a one-time offering. "I don't want it to be a marketing tool — I want it to evolve and to grow in the future," she said. "It is really about bringing a different kind of beauty to people."

Preview of the Lancome Holiday Collection
Remember the Lancome Mystery Collection? How does a brand follow something so beautiful? With baubles of course. Here's your preview of the Lancome Holiday Collection - Precious Light - which is scheduled to be released in a few short weeks.
The ring below has a Swarovski Crystal on it and is filled with lipgloss.
The line also includes two brightly coloured lipsticks - Hot Stuff Red and Rock Icon Fushia. I, of course, encourage you to try the bright lipsticks because you might be surprised at how wearable they are. Make sure, though, that you're not wearing a lot of other makeup when you try them on. One of my friends (hi Gail!) always wears red lipstick and it looks great on her, but I've seen women with her colouring not even want to try the colours. Don't be scared, just try it on.
Finally, the collection will include sparkly eye crayons and a Fatale mascara in Silver!
Count on the lipgloss ring selling out quickly so get your presents while you can!

Lancome Photogenic Sheer Pressed Powder
Leave it to Lancome to improve a staple.
I have been using their Photogenic Sheer Pressed Powder and love it because it is one of the silkiest ones that I have ever tried. I use it with a powder brush and love that it's so finely milled and because of that it goes on more like a loose powder than a pressed powder. It's infinitely smoother than any other pressed powder I've tried. Try it for yourself!

Canadian Beauty News: October 5, 2007 Worth the Hype? Recap
Gosh, the week sure does pass quickly! Last week, it's been Worth the Hype? week here at CanadianBeauty.com.
There are a few hyped products that I never got to such as mineral makeup, bronzer, and top coats, but that'll have to wait for another edition of Worth the Hype? Week. I should say that if you have anything that you're wondering about, email me and I'll try to assess whether it's worth the hype!
When it comes to deciding whether a product is worth the hype or not, it goes without saying that department store products are just nicer. For the increased price, you are getting nice packaging, a big mirror, and they give you a sense of smugness when you flip through a magazine and see yet another "must have" list. I have that, you can think to yourself with satisfaction.
If you are fine without the next "must have" product, it really isn't worth a second look is it? But if you are in the market for something new, anyhow, well then.... snap it up and tell me all about it!
So to recap: a foundation brush (including the one I have by Lancome) is a good thing because you waste less product than if you were using a sponge; hair glaze by John Frieda is also good if you're looking for a product to empower lack luster locks; new Secret deodorant is nice if you want to smell nicer; and Nars blush is good if you really want a Nars blush.
Yet Another MAC Collection...
Don't get bored of the MAC counter just yet. October sees the release of the McQueen collecion at that counter. I like to think of this collection as a kind of "greatest hits" selection. The collection includes some of my favourite products in new colours. There are new Paint Pots and a new Mineralize Skin Finish to give that gilded glow to the skin that was seen on the models during the Fall '07 Alexander McQueen show. Check out the beautiful packaging too - the writing is subtle but glamourous without being at all tacky.
And of course, here's a list of all the products that are going to be a part of the collection.
Lipstick
Masque - Rosy dirty pink
Archetype - Sheer light gold
Lipglass
Nothingless - White gold with yellow pearl
White Magic - Soft baby pink with white pearl
Small Eye shadow
Haunting - Seafoam green
Pagan Yellow - lime green with yellow pearl
Nile - Soft royal blue with white pearl
Paint Pot
Pharaoh - Creamy yellow green
Otherworldly - Mid-tone sea blue
Electro Sky - Royal intense blue
Mineralize Skinfinish
New Vegas - Fleshy golden beige with bronze pearl
Kohl Power
Jealous - Black with green pearl
Black Karat - Black with gold pearl
Feline - Rich black
Eye Brow
Velvetone - Film noir black
Lash
No. 20 - Half lash, natural black
Reader Question...
A reader emailed me and asked what colour lipgloss I would wear with my Aishwarya Beige lipstick. I have to admit that the lipstick is so creamy that I never even considered wearing a gloss on top, but if I did, I would wear a clear one so that the perfect colour wouldn't be altered in the least.
And that's all for this week - I hope everyone has a swell weekend. Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian Readers!

Worth the Hype? The Foundation Brush
"Worth the Hype?" week continues.....
The foundation brush. It's not new to the makeup world and you know that almost every makeup counter you go to will try to sell you one. It claims to make foundation application easy and smooth but do you really need it?
I just got a foundation brush, actually, and mine is from Lancome. It's the #2 brush and is a good product.
From what I've seen, foundation brushes are more or less the same. The only difference that they may have is in their sizes so whichever you pick, just make sure that it's from a reputable line so that the bristles don't fall out before you're done using the brush.
The brush does have some advantages over a sponge. It doesn't absorb any foundation and that means that you'll waste less product. The tapered shape also gives you more control than a sponge might.
That said, I am finding that the brush is easier to use with liquid foundations than with creams. The powder finish of my cream foundation means that the brush puts on more product than I like and I have to spend more time blending it out. When I use the brush with a liquid, I really feel as if I am painting my face with foundation and I'm not sure how much I like that feeling. More often than not, I get medium coverage instead of sheer (which I prefer) and I feel like it takes more work to get the product into the contours properly.
Before this, I used my fingers to apply liquid foundation and I still think that the fingers are better at putting foundation on, but I like having clean hands when I'm done. I did not find any streakiness when I was finished so if that is your concern, it need not be.
So, the foundation brush, is it worth the hype? Yes and no. It's not perfect, but you waste less product and for that reason I'll be using my new brush instead of putting it away.

Canadian Beauty News, September 21, 2007, Estee Lauder event, Aishwarya Beige Lipstick, Contest Winner Announced, and new MAC Collections!
First things first: L'Oreal's Aishwarya's Beige lipstick is in stores again! Every single time I see this item in drugstores, I go back two weeks later and it's completely sold out. Then I hear from a reader or 5 saying that they couldn't find the lipstick.
What can I say? If you want this colour (which is quite possibly the best nude lip colour ever made) go to the drugstore ASAP and get your hands on it. If you miss it this time around, just wait - it does so well that I'm sure it'll come back soon.
Also, if you're a newer reader to this blog, you can read my original rave review about this lipstick, or have a look at the L'Oreal Fashion Week Fall 2007 picture where they used this colour on some of the models.
New MAC Collections
September 27 sees the release of two new MAC collections - one called Matte Squared and the other call Mattene.
The Matte Squared collection features a set of matte eyeshadows that are said to be very highly pigmented and will provide a lovely burst of colour. There's also a set of Liquidlast eyeliners that wear without any fading or smudging.
Here's a list of what's included:
Eye Shadow
Post Haste Bright berry pink
Poison Pen Deep mid-tone purple with grey
Newly Minted Rich sea green
Handwritten Rich chocolate brown
Flourishing Rich moss green
Blanc Type Creamy beige
Fig. 1 Eggplant purple
Copperplate Muted mid-tone grey
Prussian Deep sea blue
Clarity Rich Aqua
Brown Script Warm chestnut brown
Signed, Sealed Black maroon
Graphology Dark black grey with a hint of purple
Tete-A-Tint Caramel brown
Typographic Asphalt black
Liquidlast Liner
Inky Navy blue with low-level pearl
Inkspill Deep green with green pearl
Electrolady Electric purple with red pearl
Point Black True black
Coco Bar Deep chocolate brown
There used to be a time when I didn't see the point in matte eyeshadow, but I sure do now. They really do wear longer and allow you to create a more subtle eyshadow design. for example, it would be lovely to use the cream matte eyeshadow accented with some shading with a brown or a purple. The look would be perfect for daytime. Also, matte eyeshadows make much better liners so it's great that MAC has included a black to its collection.
Mattene, on the other hand, is going to be a collection of new matte lipsticks. Unlike the matte lipsticks of yesteryear (and the ones that MAC is so famous for) these will be creamy and soft not drying. They'll still be highly pigmented and will wear wonderfully. A list of colours follows.
Mattene Lipstick
Poise Clean yellow pink (Semi-Matte)
Composure Neutral bronze plum (Semi-Matte)
Flattering Beige pink (Semi-Matte)
Café Matte Rich caramel (Semi-Matte)
Orange Dare Bright yellow orange (Semi-Matte)
Seriously Rich Bright pink red (Semi-Matte)
Immodest Bright magenta (Semi-Matte)
Night Violet Deep purple grape (Semi-Matte)
40’s Pink Neutral mid-tone dirty pink
All Grown Up Deep chocolate brown
Tango Dirty coral
You Say Tomato Tomato red
Classic Dame Blood red
Rapturous Deep red berry
Powersuit Vibrant clean yellow pink
Rougette Wine berry
I have a feeling that I'm going to be gravitating towards the pinks in the collection, but I'll wait to see it before telling you which one my favourite is.
The Aerin Lauder Event
Here are some pictures from the Aerin Lauder event that was this past Tuesday here in Toronto.
I think it's so cool how much like Estee and Aerin resemble each other.

Aerin is also going to add a bath and shower gel to the collection as well as some other goodies. Stay tuned - there are going to be many more surprises at the Estee Lauder counter this fall! Note that in Canada, the only place that you can purchase the Tuberose Gardenia Private Collection is at Holt Renfrew.
Many thanks to Matthew from the EL counter for these pictures.
Contest Winner
The prize for this contest was the best I've ever had, but the contest itself was also a lot harder to win. Wisp of a Girl gave me the most number of products and so she won.
That blush that everyone thought was Annabelle, was actually Bobbi Brown! Wisp was also the only person that identified the Lancome Destiny Cube which is perhaps the best new product this fall. Here's where I talked about it.
Also, there are no MAC lip pencils in there. I just don't use lip pencils.
I do have a lot of MAC products in there right now, but that just seems to be what I'm using these days. I really like the Smoke Signals and Gentle Fume quad and use them on an almost daily basis. The lipsticks get almost no wear at all, while if you want to see what I'm using on my lips all the time, you'd have to look in my purse.
Anyway - Wisp get in touch with me (you didn't leave your email address) and I'll be sending you the package! Congratulations and good job!
Have a lovely weekend, everyone.

Canadian Beauty News: September 14, 2007
Gosh, it's been a very busy week for me, and this week for Canadian Beauty News, we're going to hold off talking about products for just a minute - instead there are some thoughts and tips that have been percolating in my head for a while so I'm going to share them with you folks.
Still with me?
Good, here's your reward: I'm having a contest on Monday and this one is going to be best EVER. EVER!!!
Also: Emmy's on Sunday! Usually I skip the shows, but the Office is nominated and I love the cast so I'll be watching for sure.
In other news: I'm still using Lancome's Courbe Virtuose and I still love it! Really, it's a nice mascara that doesn't smudge or flake and the curl it provides holds all day. Also, I notice that it comes off so easily with just water. You rub your fingers over your lashes a little and you can just smooth it off. It comes off looking like wet plastic or rubber. Pretty cool and oh so easy. Anywho, the mascara is now available everywhere and you can also get it at Lancome's website.
Other things: they say that blush is one of those things that is universal and that any colour blush will go with every colour eye makeup and lipgloss. Well, not true, my friends. I have found that a coral blush looks so off with a cool-toned lipstick so keep that in mind.
Hmm, what else?
Oh yes, in the coming weeks you'll notice more posts about organic makeup and skincare products!! Yes, The Canadian Beauty Blog is going green... well greenish. Obviously, I'm never going to go full-out organic, but I've discovered some amazing organic products recently that I was very impressed with!
And that's it for this week. More deets about the contest tomorrow and of course on Monday.
Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

Hypnose

I had never tried Lancome's Hypnose but figured I should since a counter lady told me that it was one of their best-selling perfumes! The scent was offered in a limited edition Sheer version this summer.
The top note of this scent didn't rub me the right way, but I had already sprayed it directly on myself so I kept it on. I'm so glad I did, because the drydown was completely worth it. I have to say that this is the most comforting scent I've every worn. I'm hooked to the warmth of the vanilla because it's not too sweet either. And once the scent had warmed up on me I couldn't stop sniffing it!
Hypnose has quickly - and unexpectedly - become one of my all-time favourite scents and I'm going back for the Eau de Parfum which I'm sure will be lovely in the winter.
