Fall 2007 Trends from Eddie Malterre

A treat for hump day - video wednesday! This week: when I was at L'Oreal Fashion Week for the fall '07 collections, I had a chance to interview Eddie Malterre, lead makeup artist for L'Oreal Paris about the key trends for fall. Here is the interview, with Eddie describing the best looks for eyes, lips, and cheeks.

Metallics are in, Eddie says, as well as makeup that is mostly matte with a bit of spot highlighting. Lips are creamy but not necessarily glossy. I noticed that backstage, all the looks started off with a creamy lipstick and if the situation required a bit more "pop" a bit of gloss was added on top. The smoky look was obviously done a lot, but it was often with silver rather than with any other colour, keeping with the metallic trend.

Watching Eddie do makeup on the models was amazing and so fun. He'd made notes already but you could tell that he had done a smoky eye a million times, and he really knew how to put on blush - he pretty much always mixed powder and blush together and used a small brush so that he could really control where product was placed. I've tagged this under L'Oreal Fashion Week so click on that tag if you'd like to revisit the looks and trends from those fashion shows.

Fall Trends

Fall makeup collections are already on counters for the most part, and before you head out to the store, it may be helpful to know what some of the trends are. Because metallics are still in when it comes to eyeshadow, you might already have what you need in your makeup bag! I know that the gold eyeshadow palette I picked up last fall is still working well for me and if you're not a gold person, then silver will do just as well.

The transition from silver to smoky makes it easy to transport a look from day to night, and add an extra touch of liquid eyeliner if you're going light on the eyeshadow.

Lips are either neutral to match a darker smokier eye, or they're vamped up and matched with barely there eyeshadow.

Pick one feature that you'd like to accentuate and you're good to go!

For the spatially inclined amongst you, here's a short video with all the trends together. The pictures are mostly of dark makeup but you'll see a couple of looks that are very wearable. Enjoy!

The Smoky Eye Tutorial Video

I've been sitting on this video for a while - I took it during Fashion Week and finally had time to edit it properly. All the steps are there and I only taped her doing one eye so that the video was more concise. Note that all makeup is L'Oreal and easily found at the drugstore. Also note that the makeup artist used both pencil and liquid eyeliner and that she still used a light coloured eyeshadow as a base.

Enjoy!

Canadian Beauty News: June 8, 2007

This week on Canadian Beauty news: a Philosophy product review, a few sneak peeks of products that you should see on shelves soon and a review of L'Oreal's HIP pigments. Here we go!
Philosphy - I love Grapefruit
Philosphy has introduced its own contender in the grapefruit scent of products - the I Love Grapefruit line. As can be predicted, the products smell like grapefruit but this scent is a little sweeter and definitely not as strong as the offerings by Fresh or The Body Shop. I love Philophy body butters, and if I was picking up a product, that one would be my choice. They are less greasy than most and still very thick.

Estee Lauder After Hours Collection - sneak peek.

Click on the picture to make it larger.
Estee Lauder fans, pay attention - come July, there will be a new collection to fawn over. The After Hours collection is meant to help you achieve a dramatic look. The line features some of the following products:

Pure Color Eyeshadows in Silver Moon, Pale Moon, and Mocha Cup (pictured, Pure Color Eyeshadow in Mocha cup, a shimmering greyish taupe)

Double Wear Stay-in-Place ShadowStick in Pink Pearl and Silver Pearl (shown: silver pearl)

Pure Color Lipstick in After Hours Red, Bois de Rose, Midnight Rose, and Midnight Pink (shown: Midnight Pink which is a pearly dark pink almost red colour)

Limited Edition Brilliant Shimmer All-Over Powder (pictured - large tri-coloured compact). [If you look closely at the picture above, you'll see that there's a large shimmery smudge near the powder - that's the colour it looks if you blend all three shades together. The three smaller smudges is each of the shades separately, with the lightest shade barely visible against the white of the paper. It's a goregeous opalescent colour that's perfect for any skintone. The whole compact gives a lovely coral-bronze glow to the skin that would be suitable day or night.) I adore this compact!

I think that this collection is perfect for the summertime weddings and night parties that might be coming your way. The dark mouth is easier to pull off with pale eyeshadows and the collection offers you reds and pinks to choose from in the lipstick category.

Stay tuned for more Estee Lauder product peeks coming later this week!

L'Oreal HIP Eyeshadows

FINALLY! These eye shadows are now available in Canada and can be found at your local Shoppers Drugmart! Above is the picture that I took of the eye shadows. They come in two formulae - Bright and Concentrated and I've labelled the picture so you know which formula the colours belong to. Both are excellent and give you great pigment payoff in just a few swipes. Click on the picture to see the eye shadows in all their beautifully pigmented glory. I especially love the gold in the Flare duo - it's got a hint of holographic orange in it and makes it stand out. I'll also be lining my eyes with the blues in the Showy duo. The best part is that they also come with a mirror that's tucked underneath the compact. I have to say that the mirror is really lux - it's full sized and a real mirror - an excellent addition for a drugstore product.

That's it for this week! Here's a preview of upcoming reviews and news here on Canadian Beauty:

- a sneak peek at more Estee Lauder products
- a bit on a highly anticipated perfume
- a full feature on a product that usually doesn't last in the summer heat

Stay tuned!

Runway vs. Lookbook

If there's any proof that your makeup should be modified for the occasion, it's comparing a look book to runway pictures. At L'Oreal Fashion Week in Toronto, I took pictures of the makeup at the shows. One of these was Pink Tartan. Backstage makeup differs from how it looks on the runway which differs from what might be used for print.

Here's a picture of the look backstage - sheer silvery eyes and a dramatic red lip.

At the very top is a picture of the model walking the runway. You can see that the look isn't the same - you mainly notice the red lips while the silver makeup sort of fades into the background but it does bring some light to the eye area.

Finally, check out the picture below. It's the same outfit as shown on the runway, but this picture is from the Pink Tartan look book. Instead of doing a red lip, they went with a smoky eye while the rest of the face was sort of blanked out. Pink Tartan said that on the runway they wanted some colour, so they decided to put the colour on the lips - which meant that the eye makeup had to be more understated. The smoky eye in the look book has a completely different effect even though it's still dramatic. Interesting, huh? Click on the images to enlarge the pictures.

Conair Hair Straightener

Remember L'Oreal Fashion Week? Well, another one of the goodies that I received in a goody bag was a Conair Hair Straightener! Now, I have curly hair and for the most part I'm happy with it - I just feel that it suits my personality and I like it the way that it is. Still, when someone hands you a hair straightener, you have to try it!

I received the toy you see to your left - the Wet Dry 1.5 inch Ceramic Straightener (but mine is black). As you can see, it has vents at the side so that steam from your hair has a place to go while you're using the straightener. This is a great feature because it means that it will take you less time to dry your hair.

Although I was a beginner, I had absolutely no trouble getting my hair stick straight with the help of this straightener. All I did was put some serum in my hair, turned the straightener on, waited a couple of minutes for it to heat up, and then used it. It took me about 20 minutes to straighten my hair, which is long and was damp rather than dripping wet. I was actually surprised at how quickly and easily this worked! I could see the steam coming out in clouds and I was left with very shiny and smooth hair! It was pretty cool. I should also mention that there are 25 levels of heat and I set mine to level 20. I figured that I didn't need super-high heat and I found that #20 worked pretty well for me. This means that there's hope for those of you have hair that is harder to style - setting the iron to 25 might give you the heat you need to get your hair straight.

Notes from Behind the Runway at L'Oreal Fashion Week

I thought I'd talk about some obversations that I made while I was backstage at L'Oreal Fashion Week!

Firstly, the models' skin was almost always prepped for makeup with moisturizer. Almost without exception, the makeup team used L'Oreal Happyderm Moisturizer.

They used sponges to apply foundation.

True Match concealer was used both under the eyes and on the eyelids if there was discolouration there.

Blush was blended with powder and then applied on the cheeks. Eddie Maleterre (Official Makeup Artist for L'Oreal Paris and the Artistic Director for L'Oreal Fashion Week) and the other makeup artists would tap the powder brush in powder and then in blush and then apply the combination on the models. The brush used for blush was usually smaller than a traditional blush brush and the colour was blended on in small circles. You could try using this brush from Sephora.

Almost always, when it came to lining the eyes, makeup artists used an eyeliner brush dipped in dark eyeshadow rather than use liquid eyeliner or pencil.

Models wore false eyelashes for almost every show.

The only time I saw lip liner being used was with red lipstick.

Finally, hairstyles were set with copious amounts of hairspray. It seemed as if the hair stylists sprayed hair thoroughly before any step - before putting curlers in, before using a curling iron, before using a straightening iron, before teasing hair, lots and lots and lots of hairspray was used. The hair was beautiful to look at, shiny, and seemed to stay put for the most part.

Obviously, this and some of the other tips are better suited for backstage, but there's definitely a few things we can all incorporate into our everyday routine. I love the blush trick and that's what I'll be trying out.

Day 4 of L'Oreal Fashion Week - Zoran Dobric

The Zoran Dobric show was another one of my favourites. The look for makeup was quite subtle. Sheer eyeshadow done with just L'Oreal Wear Infinite eyeshadow in 910 Pure Silver.

The lip was done using simple L'Oreal Colour Riche lipstick in 714 Blush Scarlette from the L'Oreal Star Secrets Collection. You can see that the look is fresh and natural and definitely something that you could do everyday.

Day 4 of L'Oreal Fashion Week - GSUS

GSUS is actually a European retail brand. Their collection was targeted more at a junior customer - say teenagers or those in their 20's. The models were all young and the look was cute and fresh. The skin was fresh and the girls had flushed cheeks.

You can see in the pictures that this show was big on black eyeliner and pink lips. The gloss used was L'Oreal Glam Shine in 114 Quartz Strass. The eyeshadow was sheer and didn't show up when the girls were on stage because of the intense lighting. Still, the look was modern and very fresh and went with the feel of the show. Below is an after-show shot of some of the models - you can see that they're a hip and fun bunch.

Day 4 of L'Oreal Fashion Week - Saniya Khan

The Saniya Khan collection was clearly for an older customer so the look was accordingly toned down and sophisticated. The team used a variety of earth tones for some subtle shading with eyeliner applied under and on top of the eyes to give the lashes a lush full look. The lip was kept very natural with a gold gloss being applied on top of the lipstick. The hair was beautiful and flowing. This was a very natural everyday look.

Day 4 of L'Oreal Fashion Week - Kavi Kavi

Day 4 of L'Oreal Fashion Week started off with the Kavi Kavi show. The look was once again dramatic - more smoky eyes and a pinkish purple lip. To the left are Eddie Maleterre's notes on the look.

The team used L'Oreal Wear Infinite in 910 Pure Silver as the base and then shaded with 920 Lush Raven (a black eyeshadow). The lip colour was L'Oreal Colour Riche lipstick in 620 Mica.
You can see that the hair was in an updo - the look was for the evening and was classic. The models looked very pretty and sophisticated.

Day 3 of L'Oreal Fashion Week - Pink Tartan

Pink Tartan was probably my favorite show of the day. Above is the colour scheme for the show. The eyes were to be very sheer and silver with the lips being at the centre of attention. The dramatic lip was achieved using L'Oreal Colour Riche lipsticks in 747 Pure Burgundy and 740 Plush Velvet. On a couple of the models, the colours seemed to go on too dark so they lightened the red with a bit of pink lipstick.
As you can see, the eye makeup was kept quite simple. They used a blend of L'Oreal Wear Infinite in 910 Pure Silver and 901 Frosted Icing. Then they added falsh lashes and lots of mascara. Notice that the brows are also nice and full. Each makeup artist just used a brown or dark brown L'Oreal Wear Infinite shadow and used a brush to fill in all the brows. They looked very natural.

Here's a picture of two of the models after getting their hair and makeup done. The hair was kept sleek and straight and balanced the whole look perfectly!

If you look closely, you can see that this model is wearing nailpolish. All the models had their nails done before the show. The colour used was from L'Oreal's new line of nail colours - this one is #380 Breaking Curfew. It's a bright red shade without any shimmer. It went so well with the whole look. The show was glamourous and absolutely beautiful.

Day 3 of L'Oreal Fashion Week - Joeffer Caoc

The hair and makeup for Joeffer Caoc was very simple because the clothes were simple and in very bright colours. You can see that all they did was apply some eyeliner using some dark eyeshadow and smudged it with a brush so that it looked clean and soft. The lips were kept very neutral. Once again, they used L'Oreal Colour Riche in 910 Cashmere Satin on the lips. The hair was simply pulled back. On the runway, you could hardly even see the makeup and all the focus was kept on the clothes.

Day 3 of L'Oreal Fashion Week - Izzy Camilleri

Izzy Camilleri was another amazing show. The clothes were so beautiful and dramatic and Izzy went for a vampish futuristic look. First Eddie put black eyeshadow on all the models and then went over it with black liquid liner so that it matched the patent leather wings that were attached to the outside of the model's eyes.

Here's a model who was finished getting ready. See how the black on the eyes goes with the wings?

After getting their makeup done, the models had their hair styled into ponytails and bangs were added to frame the face. With a look this dramatic, it only made sense to have the mouth very nude. The lipcolour used is L'Oreal Colour Riche in 910 Cashmere Satin.

Day 3 of L'Oreal Fashion Week - Pat McDonagh

There were more smoky eyes at the Pat McDonagh show. Again they used just a blend of black and silver eyeshadows to create the looks you see in the pictures. The Eye quad used was L'Oreal Wear Infinite Quatuors in Smokey Eyes.

You can see that the lips weren't exactly neutral - they were a healthy pink colour. More natural than one would expect with such a dark eye. The lipcolours they used were L'Oreal Colour Riche in 714 Blush Scarlette mixed with 410 Volcanic. Again, the blush used on all the models was L'Oreal True Match in Baby Blossom.

Day 3 of L'Oreal Fashion Week - Fashion Psychology

Fashion Psychology was probably one of my favorite shows of the day. The clothing was dramatic and beautiful and the makeup was the same. They began by giving the model a smokey eye entirely make up of grey shades.

Here's a picture of Eddie Maleterre applying mascara on one of the models. He's using L'Oreal Voluminous - notice how his wand is bent though. Just like Benefit's Get Bent mascara! Eddie bent the want himself and just put it back in the mascara tube after that. Everytime he needed mascara, the tube was already bent so he didn't have to do it again. This is definitely something you could do at home by yourself if you really wanted a bent mascara wand.

Here's a shot of the model with her lovely finished eye makeup.

Here's Eddie applying the lipcolour on the model. He's using Glam Shine 223 Fatale Juice. They wanted a dramatic mouth but something that would go with the eyes, so they made the red lip sheer instead of opaque.

Here are a couple of the models after they've already gone through hair and makeup. The hair for this show was very voluminous and pretty.

Finally, the products they used. The eye design was done entirely with the L'Oreal Wear Infinite eyeshadow in 910 Pure Silver which was used a lot throughout the day. They also jused some black eyeshadow and blended the two for the smoky eye. The blush used was L'Oreal True Match in C1-2 Baby Blossom. It's a pretty pink colour.

Day 2 of L'Oreal Fashion Week

Day 2 at L'Oreal Fashion Week was hectic - 8 shows and whole lot of running around. I did, of course, take pictures of all the makeup looks before the models went on the runway. I was also able to find out what products the makeup artists were using to achieve the amazing looks. You'll see a lot of smoky eye makeup using browns instead of blacks.

The one exception is the look for the Arthur Mendonca show which kicked off the day. To the right is the look - lots of dark eyeliner and very little other makeup.

Hanes Brands also put on a runway show featuring items that you'll be able to find at any Bay or Sears stores. The look was sexy - flowing hair and a smoky brown eye that was shimmery and not too over-the-top. The model has curlers in her hair that only served to give it some volume. Once the curlers were taken out, the hair was brushed through to give it a very slept-in look - perfect for a show that featured a lot of pyjamas and lingerie.

The lip wasn't nude - it was a cross between nude and natural. The artists used one colour of lipstick that looked good on all the models.

It was such a pretty colour that the model wanted to know what it was. The colour was, of course, Aishwarya Beige from the L'Oreal Star Secrets collection.

The eye makeup was done using L'Oreal Wear Infinite Quatuors in Earthscape. It's a beautiful selection of colours and after seeing the makeup artist use it, I want to get my hands on a quad too!

The next show was for a fresh new designer named Lucian Matis. His clothing was dramatic and almost costumy. The look for the show was similarly dramatic. Again, a smoky look using browns was featured and big hair.

After putting lipsick on the models, the makeup artists too a brush and dabbed white eyeshadow in the middle of their lips. The result was a very pouty mouth. You could replicate the effect at home by using white eyeshadow put only dabbing a very slight amount on.

Eddie Maleterre (Official Makeup Artist for L'Oreal Paris and the Artistic Director for L'Oreal Fashion Week) finishing up the makeup on a model for the Rudsak show.

The finished look for the Rudsak show. Again, the quad used was L'Oreal Wear Infinite Quatuors in Earthscape. The lipstick was L'Oreal Colour Riche #910 Cashmere Satin.

The look for the Andy The-Anh show was metallic using silvers and greys. The colour that every makeup artist was using was L'Oreal Wear Infinite Mono in Pure Silver. They used a dark black shadow to line the eyes. The hair was straight and pulled back - quite simple, really so that the beautiful dramatic clothes were really at the centre of attention.

Finally, the look for the David Dixon show. More smoky makeup but this time using greys. The lips were pink and glossy. Colour used? L'Oreal Glam Shine in Rose.

I hope you're all enjoying the preview of the fall looks as much as I am! Stay tuned for Day 3!

Day 1 of L'Oreal Fashion Week

L'Oreal Fashion Week started off on Tuesday night with a bang. A cocktail party following by fashion shows! What could be better. Canadian Beauty was there to get it all in pictures!

To the right, Robin Kay, president of the FDCC wears a brown dress with a matching brown headband. I love her look because the headband didn't cover up too much of her hair. Her hair was out of the way and still looked "done". Her look was very natural, with gold eyeshadow and peach lips and cheeks. She was positively glowing the whole night - not without the help of a little shimmer, of course!

Also at the event was the crew from MTV! I had a chance to speak to Jessi Cruickshank (on the right) and asked her what her favorite beauty product was. She said that she was addicted to her false eyelashes and didn't go anywhere without them! She was super-friendly and her face really is as flawless as it looks on TV.

MTV is sponsored by MAC so that's what all the VJ's use on air and for all their appearances.

Of course, L'Oreal Fashion Week coverage would be nothing without a few pictures from backstage. This is a model getting ready for the Mackage show. All the makeup used was from L'Oreal so you know that you have a great chance at replicating the look at home.

Here's a picture of Eddie Maleterre (Official Makeup Artist for L'Oreal Paris and the Artistic Director for L'Oreal Fashion Week) putting mascara on one of the models before the Mackage show. The look was intense - all the models had dark smoky eyes and short black hair (wigs of course).

Finally, a picture of some of the makeup that they used to achieve the looks above. The eye quad used is L'Oreal Wear Infinite Quatuors in Smokey Eyes (what else?). All the makeup artists were using the darkest shade to line the eyes - I notice that they prefer ed using a powder eyeshadow as a liner rather than anything else. Their mascara of choice was, of course, Voluminous Lash mascara. Foundation and blush was all True Match and colours were selected depending on the model's skin colour.

Here's a makeup palette with a few colours on it for blending. Notice the pretty shimmery shade - it was blended into the other colours to give the models' face a healthy glow without too much shimmer.

In case you were wondering, even the shimmer shade is from the True Match line. The golden shade is really pretty and mixed with the foundation, it added just the right amount of glow to the skin, so definitely pick it up if you've been looking for that product to give your face a pick-me-up.

And that's it for Day 1! Stay tuned for the rest of the makeup trends - I'll be taking pictures all week, so if there's one place you can go to for the Fall trends seen at L'Oreal Fashion Week, it's Canadian Beauty!
